WASH Thematic Discussion Series

In 2020, CF&N, WASHPaLS and PRO-WASH co-convened a popular and well-attended webinar series looking at how infant and young child growth and development is negatively impacted by persistent fecal exposure, showing why traditional WASH interventions may not be enough to address the issue and highlighting emerging research on possible programmatic solutions. A follow-up survey revealed strong interest for in-depth dialogue among researchers and practitioners, as well as the need for specific guidance and tools for implementation and monitoring of multi-sectoral programs focusing on infants and young child growth and development. Register This webinar will share innovative advances in two projects focusing on early warning, climate change, resilience and food security in Sub-Saharan Africa. The two projects, one in East Africa and the other in Southern Africa, are as follows: The Joint Emergency Operation Plan (JEOP) Early Warning System in Ethiopia is primarily an emergency food relief mechanism, and includes weekly field-level data collection on parameters such as wages, food prices (retail and wholesale), livestock mortality, weather, livestock health, crop performance and fast onset hazards (such as desert locust or flooding). About Facilitated by IDEAL, the Food Security COVID-19 Learning Event convened implementers from June 21 - 24, 2021, and created an opportunity for emergency and non-emergency practitioners of USAID/Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance-funded activities to: Pause and reflect on the lessons learned so far from implementing emergency and non-emergency food security activities during the COVID-19 pandemic; Explore innovations and adaptations resulting from the response to a changing environment; Discuss the implications and applicability of lessons learned and adaptations across pandemic contexts to situations beyond COVID-19; and Network with colleagues to establish and strengthen relationships for peer-to-peer collaboration and learning.
