This case study report for Lesotho examines how social protection interventions and systems were utilized by the Government of Lesotho and its partners in response to the El-Niño-induced drought and food insecurity during 2015–16. It assesses the effectiveness of these programs in mitigating the impacts of the drought and explores their potential for future shock response scenarios. The report is intended for policymakers, development practitioners, and researchers interested in understanding the role of social protection in disaster response and resilience building. It can be used to inform decision-making on enhancing social protection systems and interventions to better prepare for and respond to future shocks in Lesotho and similar contexts.
