How to Monitor Quality of Social and Behavior Change in Food Security Programs

Resource Type:
Documents

Moderator: Tom Davis, TOPS SBC Senior Specialist; Senior Director of Program Quality Improvement, Food for the Hungry

Presenter: Adugna Kebede, Director for Health, Nutrition and HIV&AIDS for Southern Africa Region, World Vision

Content: Quality improvement and verification checklists (QIVCs) provide detailed checks of development workers’ performance on their key processes in order to monitor and improve their performance, identify system problems, and provide encouragement. QIVCs are used in many countries throughout the world to improve key processes. QIVCs can provide an opportunity for positive monitoring while sharing a vision of what perfect performance looks like.

Discussion: Participants learned how to create QIVCs and use them to help food security staff members grow personally and professionally—and be encouraged in the process. While this session focused on the use of QIVCs to improve SBC key processes, several other SBC quality tools were also highlighted.

The Way Forward: Participants made recommendations in two areas:

Information Sharing

  • Increase sharing opportunities – including posting of QIV checklists for different processes
  • Create short videos on key parts of the process for using QIV checklists (e.g. the initial meeting, how to give feedback to a development worker using a checklist)

Trainings/Tools and Resources

  • Development generic evaluation tool
  • Translate tools
  • Develop standard operating procedures and quality standards for SBC
  • Create a tool outlining steps to making a checklist
  • Create intro document for QIV checklist
  • “Ag-ify” materials and procedures – more doing-demonstration than talking
